I thought Nier was a great game even if it did have some problems.

I didn't like the last two endings or really any of story after the first ending.
Spoiler:
I didn't like how they made it seem like the shades were the good guys.

On top of that there was too much that they didn't explain.
Spoiler:
The whole game was played in a middle ages era but when you get to the Shadow Lords Castle there's a city with skycrappers?!?! Look at the box art, where the hell are they?!?!

Characters were great, gameplay was fun, story interests me a little still. I just wish some things were explained better and thought out a little more.

I'd recommend you to read Grimoire NieR, you'll find answers to your questions there. As I think I posted in another post, they barely explained it because they wanted to make it seem more "Life-like", and make you see the whole game through Nier's eyes.
Aside from that,
Spoiler:
why you didn't liked that the Shades had motivations by themselves? I belive the point of the first playthrough was to make you say "Shades are the enemies" and kill em' mindlessly, but after that they would reveal their true faces and how nothing is black and white. It's one of my favorite parts of the game, being honest.
Also, about the Shadowlord, the game is actually played out on a modern Japan, but the areas that you're on are actually a "sandbox" for Replicants.

Hmm, Grimoire NieR, I'll check it out thanks. Maybe now I might have better understanding of things and it all wont seem so bad.

I bought it three days ago, tomorrow I'll get it. Reviews are split, but so far as I have seen, it's a pretty nice RPG for PS3 owners.

Well, the game's here now, but as I'm playing Star Ocean, I'll try to play this later. The gameplay seemed nice, but the guy is in fact ugly.

I actually preferred the American version of the main character, after playing the game I don't think it would have been the same if he looked the way he does in Replicant. But it's all about personal preference.

Well, I didn't see the Replicant one yet, so my opinion is basing only in the Gestalt one. Even though he's better being a grown-up and a dad, he could be less ugly.

I've just got through with my first playthrough, and I gotta say: this game is AWESOME. Stunning graphics, beautiful soundtrack, envolving story, simple controls and a lot of thing to do. I just hope Cavia didn't closed down. Really, such an excellent game.

I really loved this game! The music is wonderful (just got the OST :P ), the story and the characters are really compelling and I loved the depressing tone.
Overall, it's a pretty unique game with its own personality and, as a result, I think it's my favorite game from this generation. I know Nier has its flaws but it makes me sad to see how much it is underrated.

The second playthrough of the game is making me cry. And making me hate the humans in the game.

sorry for not reading the review earlier, you've convinced me that I need to play this, but I still feel I should rent it first. But finding it for rent is not working out. I know it's really super late that I said this, but I stayed away from any of the threads below the anime threads until I felt it was okay to spam. Although, being here isn't spam, I don't know what I was thinking. but, it's what I was thinking. And nice job on keeping the review spoiler-free.

Been really bussy these days; so kinda sorry for the reply days later.

However, you're right. I completly enjoyed NieR just because it was kind of the low-budget game with great ideas and story, but that's about it. If you enjoy mediocre games with great concepts, you'll pretty much enjoy this. However, if you place polish and presentation over almost everything else, stay the fuck away from this game.

Either way, NieR was an enjoyable ride, and unlike anything I played, at least this generation. So, yeah, at best you should give it a try and see if you like it or not. Best case scenario, you won't regret it.
