I've heard that the Japanese version was clean to begin with.... I doubt they had to fix anything out of the box. Remember, this isn't Gust we're talking about.
BTW, Nintendo Power's review was summed up here. It was a short review. Saw it in my local B&N, too. The "issues" aren't explained, although the context suggested the quirky, conversation-heavy game design.
Rushing is a very good possibility. I probably would have done the same on the second playthrough if I were him, unless I wanted to read everything again. If he did this his first time, that's his loss.
