Well, they could always have put another one in that timeline.

It'd make more sense than it being after 4.

Well, yeah, it clearly isn't after 4.
For multiple reasons.

Also the 4's cast cameos mention being from the future I think.

Just that it would get a bit crowded between 1 & 2 if it was there, and then some things wouldn't make sense in either D2 or Infinite. Like if D2 was before Infinite, the lack of Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth and co. would be odd.

I'm pretty sure that "Infinite" alone kind of screws up the entire timeline as well.

Just from memory, there are two separate endings that lead directly into "Phantom Brave" and "Disgaea 2" to occur at roughly the same time, Mao and Raspberyl from "Disgaea 3" show up, and the fact that Laharl is mentioned to have been turned into a prinny (Normal Ending) which contradicts the actual canon ending (Good Ending) where it didn't actually happen.

I think I remember that "Infinite" in of itself is considered non-canon due to everything like that but I could be remembering that wrong.

On the other hand, weren't some events of Infinite sort of foreshadowing what happened in 4?

I kinda think canon is sort of loose in this series anyway.

Really? It's been a while since I last played it so I'm probably just failing at recalling.

Yeah, in a series where a character can casually talk about how they hacked their own title, some things are bound to be odd or contradictory. But it's still fun to try to piece everything together, especially with the number of games there are. Besides, it certainly hasn't stopped the "Legend of Zelda" and "Sonic" communities from trying either.

I believe there was a wiki that talks about how a certain ending in Disgaea infinite makes it canon or makes sense if you put all the stories together. I think it was because they don't know who Mao is yet or because he was a delivery boy.

Gameplay or story wise. Or both?

Story was ok and the only characters I liked were Adell and Rozalin. For some reason the gameplay was way more enjoyable than D1. I played some of D3 and D4, then came back to D2 PSP and I still enjoyed 2 more than the rest.

Maybe having a super zoomed in camera for the characters helped.

I'm pretty sure you can toggle the camera settings in other games, actually.

You can, but D2 seemed to have the best zoomed in view of them all, which I really liked.

2 had a much clearer and sprite-friendly artstyle compared to the first, which probably helped.
3 is the one with a permanently far-away camera, most to hide the low-res sprites on the higher resolution screen I think.
4 went back to letting you zoom right in, as they had the HD sprites to match that time, although switching to the old ones is an... experience. Also amusing due to how many of those they had to make from scratch anyway. Although it does show how the HD sprites actually let them go for some more detailed character designs as elements are just not there in SD.
