It actually doesn't work though. In the first Disgaea, it came down to who went second. Online play just won't work. Like people have said in the past, online battles don't mix with SRPGs. Why do you think Square Enix hasn't tried it yet? Because it just doesn't work.

The other problem is most companies (even big name companies) have a problem balancing between making a good online game and a good single-player game. This means that one will always suffer. If they added online, it would most likely become the focus. Which, I hate to say is bad. SRPGs are always better when it is just you against the world. I'd much rather have a great single-player campaign than a watered down one with broken online component...which is more than likely what would happen.

Well if fighting against players won't work then maybe we can give NIS an idea. You know how you're able to make levels and share them to other players worldwide in LittleBigPlanet? Well why don't we make a request for us to create our own levels and then let the world try it out. This way nothing won't need to be changed and you can have another player help fight if you wanted like those 3rd party helping units

So a map editor? Where you create your own maps, upload them to a server, and other people can test their team against them?

It's an interesting idea. It's a great idea. The problem is, it's a very expensive thing to have servers with maps like that. I really do like this idea though. Sure you would get terrible maps but some people would be very creative given tools that the devs use.

That's a good idea. Expensive but good.

you could like trade item for items such as one persons keeps on finding ultimus in the item world but no yoshitsuna and another person has the opposite problem they could trade.

also maybe character trade like you raised a certain character but want a different one you can trade with someone for a new one.

Now there's a good way to make the game broken as hell, especially if there's an item like the puppy paw...

The only problem I see about the trading system is to find people who will actually trade. People won't give up such valuable items so easily. Trading characters maybe a problem too for those who just started out in the game and those who are happy with their strong team.

That depends really. Look at the WiFi trading for Pokémon. Sure, there's a lot of unfair trades (Hi, do you want my level 15 Pikachu... that's one Mew please~), but you can find some pretty hardcore stuff for really cheap. Not to mention, if you have a dupe system going on, all you need is one guy to max an item, dupe it a bunch of time, put it online for another maxed item.... and eventually "valuable" items will be common.

Which is another problem of its own. It's not good to screw with the economy of an SRPG. Then we will lose the need to grind all those hours. Only DLC should be able to mess with the game that much. Otherwise you kill the majority of the time spent on the game. Plus, that could also turn into a giant mess, like most MMORPGs, when the players control the economy. I just don't think this game needs to do this, we already have enough multiplayer RPG's going on, and Disgaea should not follow this horrible trend. Especially since, like others have stated before, when a developer focuses on multiplayer they lack focus on the single player experience and the game is not as fun as it could have been without multiplayer being in there. Probably.

Well we can still technecally get Disgaea to be online without it really being multiplayer, like the ranking system in Disgaea 3. We could compete against each other without literally fighting against each other

That's the way it should be. And if they do bother to do a multi-player thing, then just make it paid DLC, so those of us that don't want it, don't have to be bothered about it.

Come to think of DLC, maybe they could make like a challenge mode for you to try different kinds of stages with special conditions.

For example: There are 10 female samurais on the map, 5 with swords and 5 with bows with an evility to instant kill enemies with HP 25% or lower with a normal attack. Your team will automatically have 25% HP on the map, healing spells and items can't be used. Your mission is to defeat all samurais before you're defeated.

Something like that. And have a ranking system to see how people did on that challenge

It would be pretty swell if N-1 implemented some form of online match between armies formed of pre-made, hopefully balanced characters. They would, of course, have to disable lift & throw, and maybe make some changes to the damage formula (or maybe not, depending on how much skills are levelled on the premade characters).

But then again, Japanese developers aren't quite known for being attentive to their players, to balance, and to the concept of user input in general (regarding custom maps).

What's the point then? If you are going to disable the things that make Disgaea unique (damage formula, unique units, lift&throw), why even do it then?

This would just be incredibly boring.

I would enjoy it, and "it makes the game unique" is not a very good point in support of these mechanics. This would be useful given that these mechanics would flatly unbalance multiplayer games; lift & throw, especially, would make fights a joke.

Well it really doesn't make sense in changing the damage formula then... Unless there were some sort of handicap to balance it out between the strong and the weak.

Also, would there be a good amount of online players so the game doesn't turn obsolete?
