Just saw a preview for the gameplay of the PS3 Umineko, and I'm incredibly impressed! I didn't expect to see so much movement in the characters. Now I'm definitely going to import this. xD

This video contains many character spoilers.

Interesting. So the console versions actually change the layout of the story? That's quite a major alteration from the original. Sounds less like a port and more like a complete overhaul.

I've heard no information yet that concerns whether or not the PS3 version of Umineko will have branches or different endings, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see to be 100% certain. I haven't played the Higurashi novels yet (as I think the group that was making patches for it kinda disappeared off the face of the earth), so I can't say how similar or different the two series are in format.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (PC) was officially localized by Mangagamer. The fan group probably lost interest after this.

I'm just copy and pasting my post from the Atlus forums, but I really don't think I have better words to describe this, and the same applies to NISA:

I agree that for Umineko, if Atlus put out something like this with the right amount of backing, they would have thousands of people that would try it just because Atlus chose it. Like look at the coverage Catherine is getting from the video game news, if Atlus put out something like Umineko it would be big. It's has literally shaped my view of reality after the 6th Episode alone. With the big popularity that Inception had and, if 999: 9 Hours, 9 Days, 9 Doors does well too, there would definitely be a big group of people outside of the current fanbase that would dig Umineko.

Please, look into this Atlus!

And Nippon Ichi America should too!

I am having a hard time playing the PC version. the art quality is horrible. I mean, it's really bad. I just can't bear to look at it. Can someone just direct me to a link in which I can just read the story? Or is it really 'sound-based'? because I have yet to see the importance of sound. then again, I haven't gotten past the part where they're all joking around. would it be that bad if I just skipped that? It's kind of boring.

Literally every scene in the episodes are important in someway for piecing together the story. And the sounds is incredibly atmospheric, I consider it the best of the best in video game music for its ability to set the atmosphere and be memorable.

Then I ask again, at least for the first scene of them being all buddy and saying hi to each other can someone please just post a link to the text of it? The art is horrible, and it's not helping that none of the characters appeal to me.

It starts like a slow (absurdly rich) family drama.

It gets much better. Much better. And I recommend sound because yeah, the music later is that good.

(And there is no text version. The art also gets awesomer by EP 2.)

The ports actually add several arcs. Info on them can be found on Wikipedia.

PS2 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_ ... ry#Matsuri
DS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_ ... Cry#Kizuna

I think they said they were still going to work on it, but they haven't made any real progress in ages anyway.

You should see Higurashi's original art. It's even worse. Umineko is actually pretty decent. Certainly better than Ryu07's Higurashi art or pretty much anything ZUN has ever drawn.

There isn't one.

Just keep playing until dinner. Things start to get interesting (and never go back through the rest of the series), the soundtrack becomes a great mood setter for every scene (it's really one of the best soundtracks in existence, no exaggeration), and the characters will grow on you as you read, mostly after the murders start.
Waiting on the other mk2 avatars.

No offense but your going to have to suck it up, the art isn't THAT bad (it has it's charms actually) and it grows on you fairly quickly, you've barely started the story so you can't expect characters to jump out at you straight away. To just read a basic summary of the story wouldn't do it any justice, the music really makes the scenes and the characters start to make impressions on you after a short amount of time.

Telling people to suck it up isn't going to help their opinion. The art is pretty bad at first from what I've seen and if I wasn't a story-oriented gamer I would have likely given up had I seen it from the start. Just not appealing.

I'm very story-oriented, but the story is boring at the start, I will finish the first episode eventually, but it's gonna be hard looking at that art all the time. I can guarantee you it will never 'grow' on me. I've seen art like that before, and I never got used to it, but if the story is good enough, I can ignore it. It's just that right now it's a bunch of character introductions that make the characters less appealing to me.

Brosuke wrote:you've barely started the story so you can't expect characters to jump out at you straight away.

Every game/anime I've enjoyed, EXCEPT One Piece, chracters jumped out at me right away. At first I didn't like the artwork of One Piece, not because it was horrible, I just wasn't digging the style. This artwork is bad. And the characters so far are all very uninteresting to me. The aunt is the only one that is somewhat interesting so far. I doubt I'll be impressed by the music much, as I've been spoiled by GUST far too much. Music will not be enough to make me want to buy this game, when i can just play a GUST game, get great story/character development AND music, with great gameplay. It's just really hard for me, as I've got no one to latch onto right now.As I get further, hopefully SOMEONE will click with me. If not, I will not be able to support this.

Well, I've never heard of a game where there's character development in the intro.

Besides, the art is a good reason for licensing the PS3 version. Everybody wins.

It's impossible for it to branch because Umineko, unlike Higurashi, is linear.

Right, this isn't a game I'll be checking out unless the port gets localized. Even Tsukihime had decent art.
