So that means NISA can keep going with Cross Edge now that he doesn't have the trademark for the word, right? And more importantly, that stupid image on the Edge Games site can go away, right?

Even if not, "Dr. Langdell"? How the hell can someone so stupid get a doctorate?

There are "institutions" that are basically degree mills. The general process is you give them money and they send you a fancy placemat. The degree itself could be in a fluff subject like philosophy or general studies (hell, even real disciplines have fluffy subtopics). I would be curious to know where his doctorate is from. If you combine a "not much to it" subject with a degree mill, you end up with an easy doctorate. In the situation I described, your limiting factor isn't intelligence, but your wallet. To make matters worse, its possible that he had some educational loans or grants to help pay for it. In which case, your limiting factor is your audacity, and this bastard has proven to be overflowing with it.

Update 8th October 2010 - GAME OVER #169
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today Judge William Alsup delivered final judgment in the case of Edge Games v EA/DICE.

It is as agreed between the parties as I posted above.
- everything decided in favour of EA/DICE (well, very nearly)
- the five trademarks at issue are cancelled
- no admission or finding of wrongdoing
- no declaration against any of Langdell's common law rights
-no award of costs between parties

As I expected, he has gone a little beyond the agreed judgment and made a further order that:

1) a copy of the motion denying the preliminary injunction (the one that detailed the allegations of fraud) be delivered to the USPTO (this pretty well guarantees that Langdell's current application for a trademark for "Edge" covering videogames will be denied, and that all of Langdell's past and future activities with the USPTO will be carefully scrutinised)

2) Langdell himself (or his companies) must deliver a copy of that order and the final judgment to ALL HIS CURRENT LICENSEES by October 15th, thus giving them an open goal to shoot into with any claims they have.

Wonderful outcome, and all respect to the judge in this case.

I expect there to be a lot of activity in the next few weeks and months as a result of this bothin the US and elsewhere.

That second order is a work of judicial genius!

It may be possible if NISA looks for the same judge that dealed with EA's case.

Pretty sure all they have to do is say they were involved in Langdell's mess and received unfair treatment because of the trademark. At the very least, all they have to do is cite EA's case.

Actually, Langdell lost his trademark, so it's up to anyone who wants Edge now. NISA can get Edge's licence back anytime now.

I believe that somewhere in another thread about this matter it was mentioned that NISA responded and said the DLC would be back up somewhere in november
