If there's one thing I've learned from reading the SAO novels, it's that Kawahara, Reki can write twists that would make M Night Shamalan shit his pants.

If you can handle the fact that sometimes stories are written to, you know, tell a story, and not serve as glorious fantasies involving characters you like, this show is for you.

Put another way, if you like Game of Thrones (the books, at least, I hear the TV show gets kind of weird in later seasons), you'll probably be OK watching this :X

I just get too emotionally invested in characters. To the point where I want to throw myself at a wall when things like what happened in this episode happened.

You're the one saying the arc is horrible and that you can barely stand to watch it. If you don't like it, don't watch it, but I don't see a cause to be overly negative about it. It leaves people (like Beedle) with a bad impression of the show when your only complaint is "a character I like is doing something I don't like" and not that production, animation, or writing quality have dropped or something.

For example, the writing in Guilty Crown actually got bad and stopped making sense. Almost everyone would agree on that point. Accel World's writing is maintaining its quality, if not surpassing the first half since it's exploring themes that hit closer to the audience and evoke more emotion.

I'm sure Aph or someone will come confirm or deny my speculation, but

I'm guessing that it's kind of the threat/rape scenario, where Chiyu is completely overwhelmed by Nomi's presence and has been coerced into aiding him out of fear of retribution on herself or her friends in the real world. She's still the one who thinks "it's just a game" so I don't think she understands how defeating him in Burst Link will defeat him in the real world.

If you actually have qualms about the writing, that's a different story. Seeing that your posts were extremely nondescriptive and knowing your taste in anime/anime characters, though, it's pretty natural to assume, after watching the last episode, that you didn't enjoy it for a very specific character-related reason :X

Off-topic, but.. this was something that was supposed to be covered by the anime.. but it wasn't. It might come up in the future, but I doubt it.

Chiyu broke up with Taku after he told her that he used that backdoor program on her. The anime seems to imply that they're still together.

When I am really enjoying something I notice flaws but quickly forget them. When I am not enjoying something, they can't help but stand out to me.
