Chatroom/ Ventrilo/ Skype

So, does this board use any of the aforementioned communication methods listed in the subject field?

It could be fun and furthermore useful for things like arranging to play online games together. I'd love to play some Little Big Planet 2 with others.

Ventrilo would probably be the easiest. It's what most World of Warcraft guilds use. It is basically a voice only skype that can support a great number of people, and it uses push-to-talk.

Who would be interested in using a chatroom or Ventrilo sever if one was up?

I've never used ventrilo, but if everyone's up for it, I can download it.

It's a really simple program.
However, a ventrilo server hosted on ones personal computer can support 5 people including the host max.

Larger capacity servers cost a cheap monthly fee to connect to and rent per month. They support 20,50,100 people.

I will setup a 5 person server shortly, but if there is enough interest, I'd be happy to get us a larger server.

Well I just downloaded Ventrilo. So how do I sign into a server someone else has created?

Once you have Ventrilo installed the next step will be to enter in the server information:

1) Open Ventrilo

2) Create a user-->
>click the arrow next to the user field at the top of the window
>click 'new'
>enter your name
>click 'ok'
>click 'ok'

3) Click the arrow next to 'server', underneath the arrow you previously clicked for 'user name' --->
>click 'new' and name it whatever you want
>click 'ok'
>for hostname or IP copy and paste this (without quotations): "174.0.20.83"
>port number should be 3784
>password will be "neptunia" for now
>click 'ok'

Now it's just a matter of configuring your voice controls. If you CANNOT talk, click the comment button on the right side to let people know with a message "Not working. need help omg"

But anyways the next step to get your microphone working is... (typing this now)

1) Click 'setup' on the right hand side

2) Make sure you check the box for 'Use Push to talk hotkey' up at the top right
> A little below there is a large white rectangle you can click in. Click inside of it and then press the button you want to hold to talk, just once. Many people use one of their control or shift buttons. I use "end"

NEXT is the most important type that may vary from person to person:

3) On the right hand side there are drop down menus and check boxes for INPUT and OUTPUT.

4) Check the boxes for "use direct sound" for each

5) in the two top right drop down menus select "default directsound device"


6) click "ok" at the bottom of the window.

--->Also you can double click which channel you want to go to

It SHOULD work by now, but if it does not, the input or output device likely needs to be changed. Make sure your microphone is not muted too

I personally have skype, i pay for vent for my guild on wow, and i use yahoo and aim, and wow....... im willing to try what ever as long as i can.
I personally like vent. Xfire is not as good as i wish it to be. and i have skype but no reasoning thus far as to why, or any knowledge due to that on how to use it.

The nice thing about Ventrilo is that it can be left up 24/7 and people can just loiter in it if they like. Once it's up, it's up until it's taken down.

I am down for any of them too, but people may be pleasantly surprised how simple Ventrilo is.

I use vent with my wow guild but its only ever 2 ppl on hahahah so i like vent personally.
