I don't totally object to digital downloads... but I'm adamantly opposed to any downloaded game that has a one-time payment and requires some kind of server connection.

I mean, a subscription is one thing. You're willingly and intentionally purchasing the ability to play the game for a certain amount of time. However, buying a full game when a company says "Oh, you can only play it for as long as we let you"? I'm not okay with that at all.

Back on topic, though... I'm currently playing RoAW2! =D

Kind of like what Diablo III did?

I'm tossing up the idea of playing RoAW0 as my next PS3 game once I platinum and get all endings for mk2. It is either that, 3D Dot Game Hero, or start the Atelier Arland series. However I'm pretty sure I don't want to start the Arland series until I finish up Iris3 and Mana Khemia1/2, so probably either RoAW0 or 3DDGH.

You obviously understand English, couldn't you just import a NA copy of the game?

Exactly like Diablo 3. I'd been considering getting the game, especially to play with a friend, but that little "you must connect to a Diablo 3 server" bit was too much for me. ^^; Saying that people can only play a game they've bought until you decide otherwise is just... >.<

Eeeeh?
I'm sure there was a hack/patch that someone made to bypass the online aspect and whatnot.

But, yeah, that sounds dumb.

@Kane
Get a new hobby. If you're that adamant that digital is against your ethics, you NEED a new hobby. You don't have to use this hobby to replace gaming yet, but you are going to need a fallback.

Just woke up, so not sure what to play today. Probably some Sukunyan, cause that game is great!

It'd need to be one heck of a patch. Apparently, the way it was programmed, saves are stored on a central server; it's not supposed to be very easy to even allow it to be offline. Which I think was a bad design choice; I mean, they could've deliberately programmed it to require the servers now, but then they could patch it later to let it be offline when they decided to shut the servers off... but nope. You're buying the right to play the game until they take that right away from you.

...

Imagine Sony adding a patch to make the PS3 required to be online. Oh, and they're going to totally slag it a year after the PS4 comes out so you can't play it anymore. That's the way I view what happened with Diablo. XD;

Diablo 2 has received continuous online support since release until as recently as this year, 10+ years. This for a game that generates no additional revenue after initial purchase, maybe ad revenue from Battle.net which is probably to offset the costs of maintenance.

If you don't want to get Diablo 3, that's reasonable, I got more than my $60 worth for sure, but you might not feel that you will. However, given Blizzard's track record, I am severely skeptical that the service will end within the next 5 years.

Oh, I'm sure the servers will be up for at least a few years. In fact, most of the people currently playing will probably be done with the game by then, and I can see the playerbase dropping off enough that Blizzard will need fewer servers to keep running the game, which means it shouldn't be any kind of real drain on their business to keep running the servers for quite a few years. I just really don't like that, in the end, it's their choice how long you can play the game for. ^^; I'm the kind of person who thinks that if you buy something, you ought to own it. Period.

It's not the same thing as Diablo II's online support however, seeing as even without online support, Diablo II could still be played singleplayer, multiplayer with direct IP, or over a LAN (remember those?) Whereas you can't play Diablo III at all if the servers are even down for maintenance or if you don't have an internet connection where you are. Additionally, if you get high ping on your connection to servers, you'll get lag, even while playing singleplayer.
It is not a good system.

Yes, I am. I was trying to find my own nihilist post about my end to gaming, but I couldn't find it. In essence, I don't expect to be gaming still by 2020 because I feel a majority of the games by then will be something I don't agree with. It is my own fault though, so...

Just a suggestion ,but maybe you should revise some of your policies to give you more freedom when it comes to theses things . The games that were mentioned can probably be put on a physical disc,or at least put on a back up source ( torrent,cloud,or flash drive) with the right software . Sharing the games with your "friends" shouldn't be that hard either since the games lack DRM ,and require no online connection .

Unrelated-

I've been trying out this streaming thing recentlyish, and it seems that the recording is getting heavy lag, even if my in-game performance is unaffected. I am looking for solutions, but for now, I'm just putting it out there that I was streaming a couple of games.

I bought Diablo 3. I'm getting my money's worth, but am annoyed by the always online policy and lack LAN support. Still, given my great connection, I'm not having many issues.

The cloud saving does make it easier to play wherever though. I have the game installed on 4 computers at various friends houses, I can access the save files instantly and progress is of course saved. So that's a small convenience for me.
