There are problems with both ends really. it just depends on which end makes you more paranoid. Well, also it depends on how much you care about 'swag'.

Yeah, that's why I try to get both (physical copy + cheap digital backup) for the games I really like.

Physical copies are nice collectables but are prone to being lost, stolen, or destroyed (and in the case of recent PC games, they're still tied to a service or DRM solution). With digital distribution, you're protected from losing the game on your own end, but that insurance hinges on whether the service is operational.

True, as long as the service is around you can just download your stuff again if your HDD experiences a reformat/wipe/etc.

The crux of that arrangement being "as long as the service is around".

Of course, but physical has A LOT more to worry about than having a service shut down.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. Just that both have their ups and downs.

There is also a limit in some cases as to how many times it can be downloaded, isn't there? I thought PSN had a three download limit now on previously purchased products, not sure about other services as I never use them.

Nope. That's only the limit on how many unique systems you can activate it on. You can dl them as much as you want.

Really? So that still means if I get three YLOD I'm screwed, but if I get a random HD wipe I'm not?

You can deactivate systems online, thankfully.

Yes, but it is only once every 6 months. If you get three YLoD's within the span of six months, then your luck is just horrible

What do you both mean by deactivate systems online and how do you do it? How does that reset the downloads limit? Sorry if I sound ignorant, but in this case my knowledge is limited.

Our Playstation Masters wrote:For purchased/downloaded content before November 17, 2011 the number of systems for activation is:

For Game Content - Five (5) PS3 and/or PSP systems
For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) PSP systems

As of November 18, 2011, number of systems for activation is:

For Game Content - Two (2) PS3 and/or PSP systems
For Video Content - One (1) PS3 and up to Three (3) PSP systems

Looks like I was wrong about the number of downloads. Also, thank you kanade2 for PM'ing me the article about how to deactivate systems.

hard copy for console games...

digital copy for pc games.

Main reason is that for console games.. i pretty much only buy niche games or JRPGS so i rather buy a hard copy of them and get whatever goody is included.

I haven't heard about anybody getting the YLoD since 2007. Do people still get these? I thought that problem died out when the PS3 slim was released.

I've had three PS3s since 2006 but not one of them ever failed on me. I just kept ditching them for bigger HDDs and better power consumption rates. Currently I have a 160gb slim model and since I'm always out of space, Im thinking of upgrading again soon.

Why not just buy a new hard drive?

And I think my PS3 is dying. : \ But it's an old 80GB model.

Because if I buy a new PS3 first, I can transfer all my shit to the new one and then ditch the old one.

Technically, I also have a fourth PS3, it's broken though, my step-uncle gave me it, I thought I could fix it, and maybe I still can, but haven't had time to crack it open. It powers on but can't read a disc, so the bluray drive is either dirty or busted. It's an old fat 80gb.
