There are problems with both ends really. it just depends on which end makes you more paranoid. Well, also it depends on how much you care about 'swag'.
Yeah, that's why I try to get both (physical copy + cheap digital backup) for the games I really like.
Physical copies are nice collectables but are prone to being lost, stolen, or destroyed (and in the case of recent PC games, they're still tied to a service or DRM solution). With digital distribution, you're protected from losing the game on your own end, but that insurance hinges on whether the service is operational.
True, as long as the service is around you can just download your stuff again if your HDD experiences a reformat/wipe/etc.
