Because games where you play as female characters are rare and niche for the most part. Stereotypical action games with tough guys sells better, so naturally big named developers and publishers are going to cash in on that.
I could be wrong, but Bayonetta is the biggest, most mainstreamest game starring a female character that I can think of.
Legend of Heroes Trails int he Sky is probably a good Example.
Atelier Totori is another example of a huge Female starring game. As well as Meruru.
Then we also have Final Fantasy XIII-2 as another possibility. Final Fantasy VI was another big one.
There are actually more than you think.
And, that's your preference, but I bet you something better that I'm not remembering is coming up. There's something I'm forgetting, but I just can't think of it right now.
Oh, another huge hitter would be Ni no Kuni PS3. Though, since you only count the original release date of games I guess that doesn't count?
