Great job, great dub!

Postby Sheleigha » Wed Feb 23, 2011 7:31 am

Here's another fan congratulating Lyner & co. for a job well done! I've only been able to play a little of Neptune recently, but I like what I see. Here's the interesting part: as a person who pretty much ALWAYS picks Japanese for the language if the option is there, I actually had to switch to english here >_>. The characters are cute, but my ears cannot handle high pitched tones consistantly. As a long-time anime fan I used to have the "SUB ONLY NO DUB!" attitude, due to terrible voices and badly pronounced names (which REALLY bugs me, even now) especially when different voice actors all pronounce one name differently. I've never understood that... But, nowadays dubs are amazing! I still watch my anime subbed, don't get me wrong, but I am more dub-friendly since everything has improved so much! To be honest, I actually LIKE their voices and personalities better in english, since I've switched over (and awesome settings you can set at will!)
Good job with the localizing, and great job with the voice acting!

...healing however, is a pain with the gameplay with me. I'm rather anal about constantly healing characters in games, whenever I can (and if I get the money/resources to do it) but here it's... a worry >_> First dungeon, both IF and Compa went down because neither let off a heal! And yes, I had their points up, AND had the items. >_> It's still a learning process, since this is only the second time I've played it and only a little bit. I'm sure I'll get used to it later on...

My thoughts exactly!
I am almost always a "SUB NO DUB" type person when it comes to JRPGs, no buts about it.

But with Neptune; and most of NISA's games/localizations, I absolutely LOVE THE DUB(S). I switched to the Japanese for a bit and wanted to rip my ears off; LITERALLY, sure its cute, and they are energetic, but holy candy wrappers! My ears couldn't take being assaulted by Compa's voice.

I also love Neptune's dub voice in general, Purple Heart is ehhhh, meh. But Neptune is the dorky, amnesiac Goddess I hoped she would be, which is awesome. LOL

I know that the higher the voice, the more they are going for being super-cutesy, but not here, sadly. I actually find them MUCH cuter in english!

In different anime/games, I REALLY don't mind the one high-pitched sounding character. The voice can be annoying, but I usually shrug it off because they are usually only a side character, and the rest have a different array of voices. But between Neptune and Compa's dialogue in their first scene together, yeah........

well yeah, I warned everyone. Compa's JP voice is ear-shattering. And Neptune's gets a little annoying sometimes as well. IFchan was the best and most pleasing to the ears, but you were stuck with Compa for a long time. I'm curious how they're gonna dub 5PB and Red.

We won't be able to, aside from battle lines. There were complications with getting things at the right time and budgets and whatnot... m(-.-)m Sorry!

Well, I guess it was worth checking out JUST to see right? It couldn't possibly be that bad, right?? ... >_>

Either way, good dub is good. Once again, it is AMAZING just how much anime/game dubbing has come! Trust me, as much as Working Design was a neat-o company, the voice acting then was... Well, it was only by the end of Lunar 2 did I get used to some of the awkward sounding, and over-the-top voices. In Neptune, everything sounds relaxed, natural, like there's been years and years of practice (of course).

I pretty sure english Compa is whoever voiced Atoli in .hack//GU. If it is, the voice now sure sounds greatly improved! GU had good voices, but I felt voices like Atoli and Gaspard were, yeah... Trying too hard (and Gaspard in Japanese sounded so cute! Not annoying...)

Awww no dubbed DLC? Too bad...

Compa is Christina Vee, I am fairly certain I would know her voice anywhere it's used; her Youtube channel is awesome too. Atoli was Bridget Hoffman, they sound similar, but there is a large difference..... just pointing that out. Lol

Yeah, I still can't believe this game made it over here! Been playing this game non-stop in my free time.
I just finished the normal ending, and I'm working through all the optional content and recruitment now.

Personally I prefer the Japanese VA, so thanks for including both so that everyone can be happy! \(^,^)v
The character's sound really cute and I don't have to hear Neptune say things like "craperoni" in Japanese which I appreciate. Don't really get the JPN Compa hate, but that's people for ya. Would be boring if everyone was the same.

Looking forward to Ar tonelico Qoga in the coming weeks as well!

Im a bit biased since im a dub fan, But I really love the voice actors in the dub. Neptunes is great, her VA really compliments Neptunes personality, and sometimes the way her VA says things makes me laugh more than I should XD Im glad Compas VA isnt annoying. I was prepared for an annoying VA, but she came out really cute, not too over the top. I like her VA alot for that. I switched to Jap for a half hour since I heard Compas VA was horrible, and...yeah. Her seiyuu....I dont like it.
Great job NISA~

No VA for the new characters? That's a bummer, especially since the no-face characters even have dubs! (speaking of which, is that guy at the leanbox basilicon the same voice actor as Margulis from Xenosaga? Sounds pretty similar to me...Different, but, same guy trying to talk different different, not different guy different >=P).

Gotta agree, AWESOME job on the dub, and the whole localization in general.

As a rule, I very much prefer Japanese voiceovers over English, to the point where I will take a somewhat inferior Japanese track just because I like the sound of the language better. Couldn't do that here, Compa made my ears bleed, Neptune sounded like she had a lot of unnatural pauses mid-sentence that I found irritating, and Gust got on my nerves as well. The English dub has none of those issues, and goes beyond passable to actually doing it well.

Then there's the script, which was also done very well. Comparing to the Japanese lines (mind you, I'm far from fluent, but I understand a fair bit) the English script is more "out-there" while still keeping the original meaning. Again, usually I'd be the one saying "give me a literal translation, stop taking liberties with the source!" But for a game with a premise as outlandish as Neptunia, a really off-the-wall script is more appropriate.

So I guess you could say I'm a moderate purist that found an exception to the rules. Good job on all counts NISA!

Woo! That's what I like to hear. I thought I found a pretty good balance with it compared to the extreme liberties taken with TriUni, or the near-literal ZHP translation.

ZHP's was near-literal? From what I heard about it reading on Silconera, it was far more "localized" than most translations go.
