and it's just therefore an extension of that. Although I agree an axe would make thematic sense regarding Fuka.

Especially considering

So, even the story should have supported this.

Problem being, you could argue that both ways,
Spoiler:
as I'm pretty sure the final boss of Disgaea 3's magichange was a sword also, and Desco being made as the ultimate final boss already inherited moves from 3 and 2's final bosses, so it makes sense to get the magichange type also.

Of course, one of Fuka's other weapons is a sword...

Nonsense!
Spoiler:
'Good' weapons are obviously guns and 'evil' ones are spears and boomerangs!
Although I can't actually remember the last game where an axe was strongly linked to an evil character...

Either way, it seems we're in agreement anyway xD

And I think NIS agrees in a way, considering how they changed it to the proper way for D3 AoD. I honestly think it was just them catering to the gameplay reasons
Spoiler:
Main character uses sword, make magichange a sword
But I think that was a real waste, considering all the story between Desco and Fuka and whatnot.

I'm curious as to how they're going to pull off these Fuka/Desco chapters. The Raspberyl chapters were really good ~

In a way, now that I think about it....NIS has a habit of making Extra scenarios have a female main character...only 2 broke that mold. Too bad it did though.

Well, that and it would really make no sense for to introduce two characters in isolation that don't work well together gameplay-wise when they are supposed to story-wise.
That, and they already have a sword magichange in there. :D

I am glad they used Desco as a Sword for D4 because I use her evility with Val all the time. But in D3 AoD I think it works better for the obvious reasons.

why not have a choice?

use female the story progresses in one way...
use a male and it progresses in another way..

So you'd need to have two different plots worked out for each separate character? That's an awful lot more work to do if you want plots that are anywhere near the length of previous games.

Unless Adell gets another lead, then yes, fem lead would be nice.

Exactly, I was thinking that but I didn't know how to put it into words

not really... you could have a basic time line quest which could divert slightly for each and come back at specific important points, it wouldnt be that hard

You'd still have to write the diversions up, so you're doubling the workload. Not to mention having to re-record every line that references gender, so that would be quite a lot unless you just avoid using gender-specific pronouns.
Also, then, what is the point of having a gender option if it influences so very little in a character-driven game? :|

I would be excited for a new Disgaea regardless. Seeing how I know the game will be good, I'd enjoy seeing a female lead this time around.

Yes, and that was because they'd already had a game before that which didn't have different gender options for the protagonist, as it one was one of the extras for the port. The game had already been done before they even considered adding a female protagonist option. Not to mention I'm pretty sure they rewrote quite a fair bit of the plot, mostly in the S-links, to reflect the change in gender. :|
