Is Atelier Totori any good?

Postby AmuroRX » Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:51 am

I haven't played an Atelier game since Atelier Iris 3 I loved the series but after Ar Tonelico 2 localization abomination I swore off NISA games. Should I start out with this game if I want to see if NISA has finally learn their lesson.

For me, it was more then enough for 2 consecutive playthroughs with more on the way after I plat Rorona, and in addition it made me cry on multiple occasions. If you love character interaction, then you might like this game. Of course it is quite different I heard from the Iris and Mana games, being that its focused less on story on more on a day to day life kinda play... like slice of life I guess. I loved it, but the time management in both Rorona and Totori turned off people I've heard.

Is it ok to skip Rorona to play Totori?

Yes it is, the only thing you miss out on is the occasional references and a spoiler or two if you choose to go play Totori first. Though for me, knowing some of the happenings in Rorona made Totori even more awesome then it already was.

It's a great game, and it was well-received by press if that means anything to you.

Ultimately, Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland should enthrall fans as a polished, progressive iteration in the long-running series. Newcomers who fancy item creation, animated dialogue and, of course, adventure, will want to synthesize just one more brew.

Give Totori a chance and you may find it hard to leave.

What? Most ridiculous name ever. >_>

Totori is good. It's better if you play Rorona first. The game practically relies on its references for most of the Arland scenes.

There's a famous actor (who passed away though) named Redd Foxx...I always thought that was a bit mean...LOL

Oh, there are worse names than Redd Fox and Grey Fox...trust me...

I still don't understand how a gaming group can mess up one game (according to opinions of the purists, I thought AT2 was fine despite the Raki glitch) and fans will automatically boycott them. Right...if you can play the originals, then why even bother with the translated ones?

That said, moving on...

I personally loved Rorona, and most people seem to feel that Totori was a lot better. It depends on your playstyle though. Since you liked the Iris series, these more traditionally-based Atelier games might throw you off from what you expect. That said, I found these Atelier games to be quite refreshing when nearly every game out there is on the epic level. But if you feel that you need some sort of remotely epic quality to your story, then go for Totori. If you want to relax more, go for the more simpler Rorona.

Keep in mind that on a scale of 1-10, the amount of EPIC in Totori is about 1, and Rorona is about -3.

I can agree with scale.
