I always pass up the companion. So, I wait further on for them to catch up.
Plus, I honk at them to talk, let them know where I am, etc.

Gives access to different dialog options, reflects that you played the story a certain way, etc.

Choices you make will have serious repercussions in the future. Maybe not so much in ME2, but definitely ME3. It's crazy how intricately woven your decisions are.

Think a morality system which isn't black & white and isn't mutually exclusive. You can earn both Paragon and Renegade points, they don't cancel each other out.
Generally, upper options on the wheel are Paragon, lower ones are Renegade (excepting investigate ones of course).
If you're talking about the blue/red options that appear in conversations, they're persuasion options that require a certain amount of Charm (Paragon) or Intimidate (Renegade) talent points to unlock.
