You enter a battle by running into monsters on the world map. Once the battle sequence is initiated you engage in turn-based combat. However, on your controlling character's turn you can move about freely and whack monsters with swords, guitars, and Nintendo DS styluses until you've depleted all that character's available AP. There's also SP which is used to transform and unleash special moves. I deliberately misled you by mentioning Star Ocean, the game plays out more like Eternal Sonata since it's still turn-based. Mk2 improved upon all of the original's flaws and I'd highly recommend checking it out via YouTube to see for yourself, it's like an entirely different game. If you hated the original, well, that doesn't mean shit in comparison to Mk2.

Yet it's a glaring example of two steps forward one step back. I cannot tell whether they're trying to be intentionally ironic by having so many poor design mechanics in a game about preventing video game piracy.

Which is a shame because NISA did a good job of localizing it.

Well the battle system seems much better and...and...*tears up* you can heal when you want. That's...I'm so happy. I might just watch a let's play of this to get a full understanding of it. Hell I might even consider getting it if I like what I see.
