Sakuracon panel?

Postby SpaceDrake » Fri Apr 06, 2012 6:18 am

So it turns out NISA's going to have a panel at Sakuracon this Saturday: http://www.sakuracon.org/schedule/SC2012_Schedule.pdf

Any word on who'll be attending? Should I show up to harass my beloved Houkykins again~?

Haha unfortunately I won't be there. Our anime division is gonna be making the rounds across the next few major cons, but it'll just be our anime manager, anime director, and a marketing team member.

Someone please ask them (politely) if they would ever dub any of their anime in the future. I mean, I find it silly that NISA claims they don't have the money to dub but they've licensed like 10 new anime in this year alone.

They aren't the only ones, Sentai only gets the most popular series dubbed, with their other series going subbed. It's MUCH cheaper to pick up a bunch of series (which already is a high amount to begin with) than to get only a couple, and focus on dubbing them for like a year. That's how they are "affording" more new series.

I think it's still worth bringing up that fans who aren't batshit crazy >_> want NISA to do dubs. I personally don't care, but I think it's a message worth conveying :)

People there are free to ask, but I can give you an answer here too.

We would love to get hold of an anime that we feel would be big/successful enough to warrant a dub. But while it may seem like we could just do fewer anime and dub the ones we do do, and it would all even out, that is unfortunately not the case. You have to look at each project on a case-by-case basis and determine if the cost of the dub is less than the expected bump in revenue as a result of the dub.

Adding a dub also increases production time and costs not just because of the recording itself, but then having to make sure the lines are inserted into the show with the proper timing, make sure it's all encoded properly, make sure the final disc got everything right (which will double QA time/costs), and so on.

Basically, for our projects so far it has simply been financially unfeasible to do a dub based on existing sales data and known production costs. If we get our hands on a project where we feel it will be financially feasible, we'll definitely look into dubbing.

I see. Well I hope someday you do get to dub something. I really wish that were the case for, say, Toradora. That was definitely something I wanted to see dubbed.

What about projects that have already proven financially feasible? If you had a series that was successful enough, would you go back to dub it and re-release it? It's not unprecedented.

Clearly I'm asking for Toradora.
Waiting on the other mk2 avatars.
