That was so freaking epic! As much as I liked S1, this was just... idk, I'm at a loss for words.
Spoiler:
the whole Gilgamesh/Berserker fight and the Excalibur bits in particular were amazing.
I would've liked to see the fight inside Rider's Reality Marble. See the big tentacle monster fling the troops around like rag dolls for a bit.

Most of the best parts of F/Z happen in the third volume, where we're at now. We're actually in the thick of it. A lot of the remaining best parts are in the fourth. The second half of the show is going to be a hell of a ride for you guys.

The second season has been rather underwhelming for me.

Love the introduction for Saber's Excalibur
Spoiler:
Her sword shines, a dream that all warriors scattered in battles, past, present and future, hold and mournfully exalt as their final moments approach. She carries their will as her pride, bidding them to remain steadfast in their loyalty. Now, the undefeated king sings aloud the name of the miracle she holds in her hands. Its name is...Excalibur!

I absolutely loved the continuation of Saber and Kiritusugu's philosophical clash. I've never been more torn between two ideals in my life, though I am leaning towards Kiritsugu's point purely because that's the side the morals of the anime seem to be encouraging.

I've never seen quite such a perspective before so well executed, it's actually starting to make me think that neither Saber nor Kiritsugu is wrong, however what is ironic is the light they're shedding on Chivalry is in fact more selfish than Kiritsugu's methods. A very new perspective indeed.

Also love the way Kiritsugu blamed so many deaths and wars on chivalry - it's very true, as chivalry is what drove so many knights to fight for their religion. Sure, religion (or you could say, human nature) was the ultimate blame in ancient history, but chivalry was the driving point to make men cloud the cold heart facts of death for the sake of honour...

Amazing. If I get bored enough I might make a log of their entire conversation at the end of the episode, it was very well constructed.

Good writing in action. o wo

Kiritsugu's the type who's willing to accept any casualties in order to complete his objective. But... I lean a little away from him because of that. It's one thing to have a certain level of casualties in order to bring about a greater good; the idea of breaking eggs for an omelet comes to mind. However, he seems to prioritize his goals to the extent that excessive casualties are also acceptable.

Seems like the majority of this anime is about picking on Saber and her naive ideals - it would take someone even more oblivious and naive to really get along with her...

Getting along with Saber means that you're in for a boring story, though.

It's the naive look at morality. o wo Which is... rather important... to the entirety of the original Visual Novel. Arguably a central theme, even.

@Reth: Well, the anime for the original mostly followed the Fate route, so... yeah. Not as much destruction of his ideals as the Visual Novel had in the other routes.

Thanks for linking that - that was a great read - almost tempted to check out the other routes other than the Fate route now to redeem him a little!

Fate route is very easily the worst of the three. Which of the other two is better is often up for debate, though.

I prefer UBW, but that's mainly because I like Rin.

Also, though? Fate may be the weakest route, but I think it serves a purpose: It lets us see what Shirou's like, and provides a measuring stick to see his changes.
