Subbed. Atlus is really the only company I trust for (what I consider) quality English voicework, and 1 had a fantastic cast anyway. MK-2 had some of my favorite seiyuu in it so I was going to be playing that in Japanese looooong before the English actors were announced anyway.

Japanese Audio. There weren't even subtitles IIRC, at least not for this series.

I found the English dub to very lacking and even probably amateurish compared it's Japanese audio in terms of emotion and impact and to any other NIS(A) games I've played which every PS3 title I own from NIS(A) has dual audio. Heck, a lot of the time, the timing felt off too.

I can some characters actually sounded better in English though, but as said above, lacked emotion and impact. Such as I preferred Gust's English voice over her Japanese.

And no, I'm not one of those dub hater.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this wrong, but both games were definitely translated and given English subtitles.

I think I liked Neptune going "Bzzzzzt" in Japanese rather than English in the first one though.

I'll pretty much always go Japanese if the option is available. I mean I platinumed the first game, then tried a 3rd time with the dub, though I didn't get very far so only heard Neptune, Compa and IF. I thought it was alright, much preferred Christina Vee for Compa over the Japanese voice actress though only because Compa's Japanese Voice actress sounded a little too whiny for my tastes, but I'm glad she toned it down for mk2.

I don't remember any subtitles unless your counting the actual dialogue box that's there during skits and scenes. I don't count that as a subtitle because it isn't, it's a dialogue box. To be honest, I can't remember if any games from NIS(A) even having "subtitles". I think Ar Tonelico Qoga might have had a toggle option for subtitles the few movie scenes they had but not too positive.

Subtitles as in scenes or parts where there are no dialogue boxes and just voices/talking, where text would appear at the bottom such as in a movie scene or during battle and when they speak. Example would be in Tales of Grace F's movie scenes, you can turn on or off the subtitles or a lot of scenes from Final Fantasy games X and up, though subtitles are usually on default/can't be removed. I know in 13-2 you could turn em off and on.

I've been constantly switching between dub and sub in both games . It depends on my mood.

I have yet to listen to the Japanese audio on either of the games, but when I sampled the Japanese audio from my first 15 minute stake into New Game + in HDN, Compa's voice got very exasperating quick. :|

I know I mentioned this before somewhere in the forums, but it just is.

To me, it's the English dubs that bring out my first impressions of the characters (and often develop upon it as the game progresses). Besides, NISA does great jobs on the dubs for most of their games..

A shame that Iffy has to represent this dub. Talk about killing off a game's seriousness...

Dear god, is that the actual dub? Sounds even worse than Arc Rise Fantasia.

@Nyekun: Thanks for clearing up what you meant by subtitles. I almost had a hard time believing you actually missed the translation. As per your definition of "subtitles", I can only think of Qoga. I don't even think there were many applicable scenes in the Atelier and Ar tonelico games where voiced dialogue came without the box.

Arc Rise Fantasia was pretty bad, though it was a certain petrifying boss that made me quit. It's probably a good thing I didn't play Chaos Wars.

For Chaos Wars', if I remember correctly the publishers' CEO decided it would be a good idea to have his family members do the acting instead of... y'know, actual voice actors.

For Arc Rise Fantasia, blame Ignition for crapping up another localization.

I have to say dub as I love the dub to NIS's games I like all the english voices. I never understood purists I really like dubs over subs most of the time. the only time i can say there was an exception was the infamous chaos wars.

Not all who prefer subs are purists if you were implying that.

@LAMV: Imageepoch screwed it up before Ignition even had a chance to. : \
