We already know that NISA would edit the hotsprings/bath minigames in Mugen Souls, I just really, really hate the term "appeal to a Western audience." Fuck that. I know they didn't want to risk the AO rating and stuff, but I really wish they don't use that phrase. I hate it soooooo much.

So are you happy that we're getting the game or not?

Of course I am, and the fact that we have to wait months for the pre-order is making me itch. I just hate when I hear things change not because they don't want to risk getting a bad rating but just so they can "better appeal to a Western audience." I just have bad memories of the phrase: Because whenever a localization company changes a game they're localizing - or moreso, when a Japanese company changes their series/formula/etc. - and they use a phrase like that, it never turns out so good.

I just don't want NISA to say that, it's both a pet peeve of mine and a possibly jinx. Just say they don't want to risk that pesky AO rating; "better appeal to a Western audience" makes it sound like you're purposely changing things willy-nilly despite knowing that westerners would not give a shit about this type of game, only those who like this type of game would.

I think they just mean that they are westernizing some jokes, which hopefully, won't fall so low as to use another "it's over 9000!!!" joke again...I think that that was one of the few jokes that actually made me facepalm, just because it seriously DIDN'T fit...

They also kinda misused "Derp" at one point in Mk2. Felt weird the way they said it.

NISA script can be funny, just as long as they avoid memes, especially bad ones.

Trying to remember how they used it...I wasn't paying much attention to most of the jokes :P But yeah, I think for the most part, their "Westernization" will just be them changing some jokes around...heck, NISA has never been one to shy away from the dirty jokes/anime/manga references after all

You can hate it all you want, but it's the easiest way to get across the idea of what's going on. Certain things work in Japanese culture that don't work in Western culture. In those cases, we do what we can to make them work for our audience. (And keep in mind, "our audience" is more than just "people on the Internet." Most of the people who play our games will never post about it online.) The focus should be whether it's done well or done poorly, not on the phrase that represents what every single game localized from Japan does to some extent.

If you've played any of our company's games before, you already have a pretty good idea what to expect in this one.

@Houk - Thank you, that's what I've been trying to say, but when I tried typing it out, it seemed a bit too aggressive

I'd rather have a bit of censorship than not see the game at all.

Very informative. Good interview and the Phoenix answered the questions very well.

Sensible.

I can see why you'd think that, but what did you think NISA meant? They were going to turn it into a First-Person Shooter?
