Lost Planet offshoot EX Troopers may have just been announced this week, but it's already set for a playable debut. The game will appear at the Capcom Summer Jam event in playable form. Capcom Summer Jam will be held at Tokyo Big Site on June 30 and July 1.

Here are some additional details on EX Troopers from Famitsu's reveal article and a summary at Sokuho.

EX Troopers tells of the fight between the snow pirates and Akrid aliens on EDN-3rd. You play as Bren Turner, a young man who's come to the academy (the game has a school theme) from EDN-2nd. Famitsu also introduces such characters as TeeKee, a female snow pirate who has the ability to communicate with the Akrid, and Gingira, a Vital Suit that's loaded with next generation AI and can communicate with its pilot. Gingira calls Bren "Master."

The EDN-3rd planet has three bases, each with unique traits. You select one of these to serve as your base of operations. The three bases figure into the story, as while Bren comes from one base, other members of the academy come from different bases. The story will be told through "manga demo" cut scenes (similar to Gravity Rush).

Famitsu managed to get some interview time with Shintaro Kojima, the game's producer (previous work on the Monster Hunter series). The game was started with the hope of making a beginners' action shooter, explained Kojima. While EX Troopers shares its world setting with Lost Planet, they hope that players play it lightly as a new title.

Unfortunately, the reveal article does not seem to have much in the way of gameplay details. But with a playable debut coming next month, we'll hopefully get details over the coming weeks.

EX Troopers will see 3DS and PS3 release some time this year. The game is currently 60% complete, Famitsu reports. Capcom is also planning developments outside of games for the title

This game looks awesome.

Pretty disappointed there's no Vita version, though.

I'm kinda wary of this coming stateside. It doesn't seem like something Capcom US would think has much selling potential. Which sucks 'cause it looks awesome. Never played the Lost Planet games though so I can't say much.

I don't know about this,

but Lost Planet 2 has one of the best co-op campaigns ever made. Think of it like if Konami actually got off their chair and made a quality 3-D Contra. Of course the stage setup has some really short stages and some long ones, but the length, overall replay value and challenge at highest difficulty is levels above other things out there.

I don't like the direction they are going with Lost Planet 3,

who knows if EX Troopers or LP3 will have the one feature that enhanced the replay value, which is protagonist customization/edit. You can customize your own character using parts from other models used in the game, including enemies, female characters, and even some crossover DLC characters. (of course to use this feature you have to beat the campaign once, but it's a great feature!!)

Lost Planet 3 does ground and mech combat better than even Front Mission games. You mostly fight on foot, but there's so many cool things about LP2 including that grappling hook that adds more dimension to mobility and combat.

The T-ENG system is well done, the skill system, unlockable weapons, you can even have your own personal loadout. And the best weapons are so cool! Including some nova looking bombs, frizbees, and all sorts of ballistic and energy weapons.

AND LP2 has TEAM ATTACKS! With the right weapon setup you can COMBINE your weapons/support to create different types of SUPER WEAPONS, including one that like rains down a supernova onto the battlefield, another with a gigantic laser, and another that produces some kind of sword.

Character interaction wise, LP2 jumps between perspectives in the story, but all of the episodes are entertaining and really epic as a whole, especially the desert pirates one! :D

And many great epic massive bosses to fight!! There are even many ways to use a battlefield, like one stage, I didn't even notice there was a mech stationed somewhere until several runs later.

Also certain mechs you can COMBINE into an even more epic mech!! And yes you can repair mechs, pull out their guns and use them yourself, or attach those weapons to a new mech.

the train boss battle is one of the most epic bosses ever (the one where you fully operate and maintain a train. Keeping it cool, loading shells, enhancing shells, turning/aim the giant cannon, cleaning up akrids that get on the train, turrets to operate, I even think there is a helicopter you can pilot, etc. )

If there weren't great titles released after LP2 I would still be playing it, but although I am playing RE:ORC, LP2 is longer and overall better than any other shooter, campaign-wise, IMO.

But don't base the greatness of Lost Planet 2 with LP3 or EX Troopers, who knows if their full scope of features, gameplay and level design will match up with Lost Planet 2's.

The fact that it has ties to the Lost Planet universe, and also guns, in addition to Japanese cliches like a school setting and anime art style, makes me think that they're trying to appeal to a worldwide audience with this game.

But frankly I think that will backfire. I don't really see this game having mass appeal in any region of the globe.

anime or not, it's the core gameplay and features, level design and stuff that determines if it will be entertaining and well accepted.

It really would have to have Lost Planet 2's features and brilliant design at least. it could be a hit. but we'll have to see all its features and stuff to determine how it scales.

look at Borderlands, it has an extreme anime vibe to it's presentation (well part anime, part cartoon), but it's gameplay and features holds up so well it because a GOTY candidate, got expansions, AND influenced a straight sequel.

of course 4 players co-op is a must, and I don't think those extra characters are just for show. maybe there are at least 5 playable characters to choose from the start.

I like shooters so I don't.

Anyway, I think this looks pretty fun; I never played much of Lost Planet though, just the demo from... E3 2006, I think? Well, I remember having fun with it, at least. Given that it's a shooter, and probably doesn't have TOO much text/dialogue to translate, I think this has a decent chance of making it over.

if it just focuses on the guy protagonist, it could suck like LP3 is looking.

one of the great things of LP2 is that it really let players customize their own character how they like, there there are much more flavors and types to choose from than just having some premade character to use.

if EX Troopers don't offer the protagonist flexibility and customization of LP2, then it might be a no sale for some people.

hmm this is interesting news...But since MML3 contained user created content, do you think capcom may have ditched the MML3 title just to take free ideas of a fanbase (after all who knows what a fanbase wants more than a fanbase) without the need to credit others and simply place them in another title?
Of course all of this is just speculation.

That sounds kinda dirty, but then this is Capcom we're talking about, a company that makes a new version of a game less than six months after the original came out.
