Well considering that the father is a multimillionaire, there are five children, and the schools the girls are going to are expensive (at least Duke is), that isn't that much money to them. To us, it's a crap load. The girl who graduated from Duke must be tremendously smart. The salutatorian of my class didn't get into Duke.

What I appreciated is how the father realized how much of a blessing it was that he was able to pay their way, and really doesn't seem to be taking his money for granted at all.

On the bright side, FAFSA isn't the only source of scholarships. There are many, MANY places that offer them, so persistence in trying to get them can get you a lot of money.

Heck, back when I was in High School, I got $2400 for College simply by convincing a staff member (who was interviewing on behalf of a number of schools and organizations) that I deserved it. It's something you gotta work for to get enough, but many scholarships go unclaimed every year.

Especially when costs keep going up. v.v My state's supreme court actually had to hand down an order to stop taking away funding from schools and driving the costs up because they were so fed up with watching costs keep rising, at a time when fewer and fewer people could even afford the less-expensive Community College, much less any sort of University. Costs have, what, doubled from when I began college? o.O Or thereabouts? And that wasn't very many years ago.

Yeah the cost to LEARN nowadays is terrible. Why do all the important things get taken away when it comes to government budget cuts? Why education and medical? Do they WANT people in the future to stay sick/die and become stupid? -_- (Of course, the supid part can be argued, but understand where I'm trying to go with this). Seriously, it baffles me. What's sadder is that since I've been through the schools system, two of my schools don't even exist anymore. I can look now and go "yeah, where that McDonalds is, was where I used to learn" :/
Cities like Oakland are getting hit hard with school closures... You would think in a city like that, schools would be... sort of important, right?

The big question now is whether college is even worth it in the first place? Let's put it this way, not even an advanced degree is really that helpful when trying to get into the job market. I should know, I graduated with a masters, top of my class (also that way with the bachlors in Biology) and have yet to even "get my foot in the door". Explains much of my admited cynical outlook on life.

Well it depends on what you major in while in college. If you're going to do what one kid in the local paper did and major in art (and rack up 100,000s of dollars in debt) or major in what my step-father did (one dealing with music, the other dealing with communications), you might have a difficult time finding a job.

That's... definitely a good question :/ In many cases you need it, but if you can actually get somewhere is another question. My biggest fear, really. Almost everyone I know with really good jobs got there through connections. If you don't have connections, its not as easy to get into things, and in many cases there will ALWAYS be someone there more qualified than you. The biggest thing I hear about, is people coming out of school with a degree... and no work experience. It's tough, since it's hard to get the experience in the first place.

*sigh* I hope I will be able to land a good job when the time comes... Would be nice to earn some real money for once. Retail makes you insane >_>

If you want to know, my major was biology/biotechnology. Got my BS in 2007 with Program Honors (an award to the top students in the program and apparently my nomination was unaminous). Graduated with my MS in spring 2009, a few months after the melt down. My greatest fear in school was that the economy would collapse around the time I graduated.

A little under estimated but yeahh... For me, it's always been more "I hope I FIND something when I get my degree..." People can still find jobs now. There's always people changing jobs, moving, retiring, but... it's all a matter of luck. I say luck, because no matter how good you look on paper (and in person) you still may not be able to get in, which is a harsh reality. The worst part with my fear, is that it's completely rational with how things are. You go into a university program, and everyone in your class (considering they pass and get their degrees) are potential competiton.

Plus, the current job market isn't exactly open to many new hires. XD; In fact, it barely even exists; lots of completely competent, motivated individuals, whom businesses normally like to have, can't get jobs 'cuz everything's so messed up right now. Kinda sucks when it's not even your fault that your chances for starting a good career are going up in smoke... ^^;

Where's Meruru? >.> She could probably fix this.

Welll...the job market in Japan is opening up, mostly because their population is dwindling.

For whatever reason, lack of desire for sex among the young, which has contributed to an already dwindling birthrate. And then there's still the pretty strict and unwelcoming immigration regulations.

I read an article on crunchy roll that said 54% of the female population isn't interested in sex, it's higher than the male % o.o

I remember that article. It was sad in a way.
