Yakuza 5 finally has playable female character!! Haruka

Oh this might be interesting.

http://andriasang.com/con13w/yakuza5_detailed/

"Yes, the magazine confirms Haruka as a main character, and this does mean she'll be playable"

But I dunno how the main characters work in that series.

Do you like choose a character and they have their own story and free roam walkthrough and stuff?

it would suck if it switches character as the story progresses.

So what is this series about anyway? I heard it was partial beat em up, partial free roam city.

I already knew about this, but this is something I wanted sooooo bad ever since i played Yakuza 3!

Haruka's the perfect choice honestly. Her and Kiryuu have been together since like ever, and she's like his daughter, which would make sense that she'd learn how to fight

so like it's hand to hand to combat system, I haven't cared about the series until now. I don't think they use guns.

How free roam is the city and stuff? and how does the main character system work?

is it more like GTA (just free roam around, do missions )

or Skyrim? (interact with characters everywhere, maybe live somewhere if you want, kind of up to you what to do and stuff.)

Well all I think I know about this series is that you don't just go around killing pedestrians, it has a more mature and practical approach to city life, I think.

I'm also liking the character designs because they seem more realistic Japanese looking than 99% of the videogames that take place in Japan where characters look westernish or anime.

Yakuza series still doesn't look hyper photo realistic like Siren japanese characters, but still more realistic looking than say, the asians in Virtua Fighter or Tekken. There should be more videogames with more realistic looking asians instead of catering to western appearances. The world isn't just about white looking people, of course.

Affinity...just...wow

Anime actually resemble real Japanese people quite a lot. Sure, they're more colorful than Japanese, but in terms of body/facial structure and other things, they most definitely look like Japanese people. There's not really a 'pandering to westerners' like you stated at all.

Anyway, it's probably closer to GTA...?

Although this could be bunches different since they're trying to give the series some new life.

Well there are many examples, like Fatal Frame for example, they are more animeish looking than natural. I haven't seen any Japanese girls with eyes that big and face structure like that (well at least some of the designs. They do the hair good, though). Fatal Frame character designs look like cartoons compared to things like Shenmue (which is weird because some designs in that look more natural than others.)

another example Dead or Alive obviously.

a big example are DYNASTY WARRIORS and SAMURAI WARRIORS (most of them appearance don't even pass for chinese/japanese, you can't deny they at least partially westernized their designs.)

there are a few exceptions like Okuni, but there examples in the industry how westernized asian characters really are in some videogames.
Of course I don't mean all. :?

I'm really not seeing your point being made all that much. If anything, the chracters in the DW games were more Japanized than 'westernized'.

How many Japanese people have you known? I've known quite a few in my life.

Although, i could agree that videogames have been more westernized than anime. If you hadn't of thrown anime in there I would have likely not bothered. You gotta remember than anime are made for Japanese people, because Japanese people are the ones who will pay hundreds of dollars for one season of a show. Westerners won't. THere are exceptions, but really not many compared to the western anime fanbase in general. When it comes to games though, Westerners generally buy those up more.

Now, as for what you mean, you're talking about the photo-realistic look, which not as many games go for that aren't Western. I do agree with that. It was just your comment about them being 'westernized' that I didn't agree with.

EITHER WAY

Bring on Haruka and Kiryuu 8-)

Yes.

I'm looking forward to this as a fan of the Yakuza series. Supposedly, Haruka's story is her going to Osaka to try and become an idol. It'll be interesting if she actually fights. I hear Yakuza 5 is taking place 2 years after Yakuza 4 so who knows how she has changed.

Yeah but it talks about how things don't go as planned. So, I'm sure she fights ;)

She can always be a fighting idol?

I don't know... The Yakuza series is pretty ridiculous at times, but it's also full of gun-wielding murderers and children are usually portrayed relatively realistically. While beating down low-level thugs as a 14-year old girl could be fun, it'd be an odd choice for a series that's known for portraying Yakuza and their situations in a realistic light.

She grew up under the tutelage of Kiryuu Kazama. And witnessed many of the fights he got into. She pretty much would inherit the Yakuzaness of Kiryuu's life. It's not as far-fetched as it may seem.

I don't think Haruka's character is actually going to fight or anything like that. The parts where you play as her are probably going to be more relaxed. I think anyone who has played the Yakuza games before knows fighting would go against her character and Kiryu would never allow it anyway.

Though to be honest, it would be pretty interesting to see her follow in the footsteps of Kiryu. I just don't think that's going to happen. I think her parts of the game will probably involve school life, running errands, going with friends to karaoke and things like that. If the rumors about her trying to become an idol are true, maybe they'll combine the karaoke mini-game with the Hostess Maker mini-game and flesh them out a bit and make them more idol-like.
