For the cig thing, maybe, it just seems to be the norm if you are near someone with a lighter, even in the states I see it a lot

And it seems that not many people recommend Dead Souls...

Dead Souls is pretty good, but it's a goofy spin-off and probably isn't the best place to start if you're new to Yakuza. The controls are a bit... awkward. But once you get used to them and get some decent guns, it's really fun. Co-op is sorely missing from the game, though.

4 is actually a really good place to start because not only does it have the scenes from the previous games, but also 3 out of the 4 main characters are new to the series.
